A carbon aero part needs a secure path from the panel to the vehicle. That path may involve clips, bonded mounts, backing plates or dedicated brackets. The right arrangement depends on what the part is designed to do. A cosmetic front lip and a splitter intended to carry aerodynamic load should not be treated as interchangeable installations.
Start with the instructions for the exact part and bumper combination. The name “splitter” alone does not tell you the mounting requirements, and a photograph of a finished car rarely shows the underside. This guide helps you plan the installation, inspect the supports and recognize problems before the car returns to use.
Establish the part's job and the complete mounting system
A lip often follows the lower bumper's shape. A splitter can extend forward or under the vehicle and may require a separate support system. Side skirts can be full replacement panels, covers or extensions. Each arrangement changes where loads enter the part and how the attachments can be reached.
List the components in your installation before removing the original parts: the panel, brackets, clips, inserts, spacers, washers, nuts and bolts. Confirm which items are supplied and which are reused. Do not assume that support rods, adhesive or a visible fastener on another build belong on yours.

Prepare the vehicle and inspect the original attachments
Work on a stable, level surface with the vehicle supported using the correct lifting points and rated equipment. Never work beneath a vehicle held only by a jack. Account for how a new skirt or splitter affects access to those lifting points when planning future servicing.
Inspect the bumper's lower edge, clips, undertray attachments and any brackets you will reuse. A damaged bumper tab cannot become a reliable aero mount simply by adding a larger screw. Corroded or distorted supports also need attention before they carry a new part.
Record the starting position of adjacent panels and undertrays. Protect paint where you will handle the part, and keep a second person available for a wide or awkward panel. A helper should support its weight during fitting so the first fastener does not temporarily carry the entire assembly.
Dry-fit the complete front end
- Confirm the bumper variant. Check that the panel matches the bumper, model and existing modifications.
- Position the part naturally. Use suitable temporary support. Do not twist the part until its edges meet the bumper.
- Check the whole perimeter. Look at both corners, the centerline and the underside. An apparently good fit at one end can hide interference at the other.
- Check the brackets. Confirm their orientation, access and relationship to the intended mounting areas.
- Fit neighboring pieces. Include undertrays, liners and adjoining aero that affect the final position.
- Mark only approved holes or adjustments. Photograph any unresolved interference before modifying the part.
The panel should not need bolt tension to pull a large gap closed. If it springs away when released, find out why. A bracket at the wrong angle, a missing spacer or an incompatible bumper can all look like a panel-fit problem.

Make each fixing bear on a suitable area
Identify whether a fixing passes through a clearance hole, engages a clip or threads into an insert. Confirm its length and seating surface. A bolt can bottom out before clamping the assembly; a short bolt can engage too little thread even when the head appears seated.
A suitable rigid washer or backing plate spreads load across its bearing area. It must sit on a surface that can support it. A washer bridging a curved or unsupported shell can create uneven pressure. Where a core or hollow section is involved, the mount may need a designed insert or compression limiter.
Rubber or silicone can cushion a suitable interface, but a soft washer is not a substitute for a structural backing arrangement. Adding a thick compliant layer also changes the joint. Use the specified material and stack rather than assembling washers until the fastener feels tight.
Where drilling is required, follow the carbon drilling and trimming guide. Avoid moving holes, adding countersinks or driving self-tapping screws into thin laminate unless the part's design specifically permits it.
Support rods are part of a design
A rod is useful only if both ends connect to suitable locations and its geometry works with the rest of the installation. Attaching one end to a weak bumper skin does not create a strong load path. Likewise, a highly angled or poorly positioned rod can introduce loads the panel mount was not designed to carry.
Set any adjustable supports according to the supplied procedure. Do not use them to bend a panel into the desired position. Do not drill a crash beam, modify crash-related structures or improvise welded brackets from a generic blog diagram. Those decisions need a vehicle-specific design.
Standing on a splitter is not a meaningful substitute for the manufacturer's validation. A person applies a different load pattern from road use and can damage a part that otherwise looked secure.
Check side skirts as a working part of the car
Confirm whether the skirt attaches at the upper edge, the ends, underneath, or through a combination of locations. Keep factory drainage, door seals and necessary service access clear. Do not block a jack point or make the carbon panel the place where the lifting pad bears.
Test door opening and closing throughout the fitting process. Look for an end touching a fender, an edge catching the weatherstrip or a clip being held at an angle. Where the skirt meets a front or rear extension, check that one part is not forcing the other away from the body.
If adhesive is specified, use the correct system for the actual surfaces. Surface preparation, application temperature, pressure and time before use belong to that product's instructions. Tape should not be added as compensation for missing mechanical supports.
Check clearance through movement
Assess the car at its intended ride height with its actual wheels and tires. Check steering movement, tire-to-panel clearance, access to tow points and clearance around undertrays. Suspension travel must be evaluated safely by a competent installer; a parked-car photograph cannot demonstrate it.

Final tightening and the handover check
Start threaded fixings by hand, seat all supports and use the specified tightening sequence and torque. Match the specified thread condition, including any lubricant or locking product. Watch for a panel dishing around a head, a washer tilting or an insert turning. Stop if the mount distorts or cracks.
- Every specified fixing, bracket and support is installed.
- The part remains aligned after final tightening.
- Undertrays, liners, doors, wheels and moving components have the required clearance.
- Any adhesive has reached the required strength before service.
- The owner understands the inspection schedule and what to check after a scrape or impact.

Common questions
Can I fit a splitter with screws and tape?
Only if that is the complete attachment system specified for the exact part and use. A generic screw-and-tape approach does not establish its load capacity.
Does every lip need support rods?
No. The mounting design determines whether rods are needed. Unspecified rods can add loads or damage attachment areas.
What if the part moves or flutters?
Stop using the vehicle until the mounting fault is resolved. Do not test it at greater speed or keep tightening a damaged mount.
