Choose a widebody kit, wheels and tires as one fitment project. A wider outer panel does not automatically create more clearance inside the wheel well. The wheel's position, tire shape, suspension movement and any required bodywork all need to work together.
The goal is a car that clears through its intended movement, not just one that looks right when parked. Before ordering wheels from a photograph, build a record of your current setup and identify what the new bodywork actually changes.
Define the complete build before choosing an offset
Record the chassis, exact kit, intended use and planned suspension. Confirm which bumpers, fenders, extensions and companion pieces belong together. Similar-looking kits can place their edges differently, and a photographed car may have modifications that are not obvious.
Decide the intended ride height and tire use early. A street car, drift car and circuit car can have different priorities, but each needs suitable load capacity, secure wheel attachment and working clearance. Select alignment targets for the vehicle's use with a competent specialist rather than adding extreme camber to hide a clearance problem.
Check whether the kit replaces the original panel or mounts over it. Where cutting or joining metal is required, have the body shop define the operation before purchase. Outer width is only one dimension; the original arch, liner, seams and inner wheel well may still limit the tire.
Measure what is on the car now
Work from a level surface with the vehicle in a defined condition, including tire pressures and normal load. Record both sides separately and keep the photographs labeled. Do not assume the body or suspension is perfectly symmetrical.

Measure at the areas that can actually touch, including tire shoulders, rim lips and nearby suspension components. Write down how each measurement was taken. A photograph of a ruler without a clear starting point is difficult to use later.
Understand wheel width and offset together
Wheel offset describes the position of the mounting face relative to the wheel's centerline. For wheels of the same width, reducing positive offset moves the wheel outward. Increasing width changes the position of both inner and outer sides, so a width change and an offset change must be considered together.

Here is a simple example with no change in spacer thickness. It compares nominal rim positions, not the full tire envelope or the outermost shape of every wheel design:
- Current wheel: 8.5 inches wide with +35 mm offset.
- Proposed wheel: 9.5 inches wide with +20 mm offset.
- The width increases by 25.4 mm, adding 12.7 mm to each side of the centerline.
- The offset decreases by 15 mm, moving the wheel outward by that amount.
- The outer nominal rim position moves 27.7 mm outward. The inner nominal rim edge moves 2.3 mm outward, increasing its clearance by 2.3 mm.

This is why “one inch wider” does not tell you how much the wheel will protrude. It is also why copying a wheel width while missing the offset or spacer information can produce a different result.
Check the actual tire, not just the sidewall number
The tire marking describes nominal size and other characteristics. It does not mean two different tire models will have identical shoulder shapes on a given rim. Use the tire manufacturer's dimensions and permitted rim-width information for the specific tire, then verify the assembled fit.
Michelin's tire-marking guide explains nominal section width, aspect ratio and the other sidewall codes. Include load and speed requirements in the selection; a visually suitable size is not enough.
Changing overall tire diameter can affect more than the top of the arch. It can change clearance at the front and rear of the wheel opening as the wheel steers. Assess compatibility with the vehicle's systems and drivetrain when changing the rolling dimensions, particularly where different front and rear sizes are proposed.
Check clearance through steering and suspension travel
A static check is the start of the process. The front tire sweeps a wider envelope as it turns, and suspension movement changes its relationship to the arch and inner components. The rear also needs a travel check; a good parked gap can disappear under load.
Have the installer evaluate the intended range safely using the correct equipment and procedure. Check steering positions as well as suspension movement, including relevant combinations. Do not rely on a quick bounce test or place yourself under an inadequately supported vehicle.
Look for contact with liners, seams, brake hoses, wiring, springs and suspension arms. Decide which interference can be addressed within an approved installation plan and which means the proposed wheel or tire is unsuitable. Do not sacrifice a hose, protective liner function or structural area to make an attractive specification fit.

Plan the bodywork and mounting before paint
Dry-fit the kit with the relevant bumper, skirt and adjoining panels. Establish the bodywork position before final paint, bonding or irreversible arch modification. A wheel specification based on a loose overfender held against the car is still provisional.
If the installation needs metal cutting, seam work or corrosion protection, include it in the body shop's scope. An outer extension can conceal unfinished work, but it does not weatherproof or strengthen that work. The correct treatment depends on the vehicle and kit design.
Check fastener access and serviceability too. Consider wheel removal, liner access, towing and how a jack reaches the correct lifting point. For adjoining aero, use the splitter, lip and side-skirt mounting guide.
Treat spacers as an engineered component
A spacer is not a universal cure for an incorrectly chosen wheel. It affects the mounting arrangement and may change effective offset, centering, thread engagement and loads. Use only a suitable, approved configuration for the vehicle, wheel and fasteners.
Check the wheel's bolt pattern, center bore, seating type and required hardware. Matching the number of holes does not establish compatibility. If studs, bolts or adapters need changing, resolve those requirements with the installer before the wheels arrive.
Build a complete installation budget
Allow for trial fitting, bodywork, finishing, mounting hardware, wheels, tires, alignment and any necessary liner or service-access work. Include transport and a final inspection. An inexpensive wheel choice can become expensive if the bodywork has already been finished around a different setup.
Check local road-use and inspection requirements with the installer where relevant. Keep those decisions tied to the actual vehicle and location rather than assuming a show-car photograph demonstrates road compliance.

No. Inner clearance, tire movement, brakes, attachment and vehicle behavior still constrain the choice.
